Beneficial bacteria secrete enzymes that digest food and clear away waste lingering in the colon, easing an uncomfortable, bloated stomach.
Bloating and gas are signs of digestive disturbance, caused mainly by the four factors below:
- Diet: An unhealthy, unscientific diet; eating too fast, not chewing thoroughly, swallowing hurriedly; too much protein, fat, starch, spices and stimulants (alcohol, beer, coffee, tobacco); food poisoning, spoiled food, food high in preservatives or pesticide residues, and so on.
- Medication: Antibiotics taken after illness, treatment or surgery, or drugs for chronic disease, can also cause bloating, gas and loose stools.
- Stress: Prolonged tension and changes in the weather.
- Bowel disease: Colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, long-standing digestive disorders, stomach ulcers, and so on.

The gut contains a microbiome of both good and harmful bacteria. For a healthy digestive system, the balance is 85% beneficial bacteria and 15% harmful bacteria.
The four causes above increase harmful bacteria and reduce beneficial ones, upsetting this balance. With fewer beneficial bacteria, the gut cannot secrete enough digestive enzymes or clear waste, so food lingers in the colon. Meanwhile the growing harmful bacteria produce gas, causing bloating, flatulence, disturbed bowel movements, and undigested, loose or hard stools. Left untreated, this can develop into colitis and even carry a risk of colon cancer.
To restore a healthy, balanced digestive system, beneficial bacteria must be replenished. Bifidobacterium (Bifido for short), which lives mainly in the colon, should be prioritised, as it processes the large volume of food that accumulates there.

However, getting Bifido into the colon is not simple. People usually take probiotics by mouth. Passing through the stomach, Bifido tends to die in the highly acidic environment, and only a small amount reaches the small intestine.
To increase the number of surviving Bifido, Japanese scientists developed the SMC (Seamless Micro Capsule) protection technology, wrapping live Bifido in a seamless, acid-resistant double-membrane capsule. This delivers more than 90% of the Bifido all the way to the colon, helping rebalance the gut microbiome and quickly ease symptoms.

Bifido attaches to the villi lining the intestinal wall, absorbs toxins and breaks them down. It also secretes mucus that coats the intestinal wall, forming a double shield that keeps harmful agents from attacking it.
