Internal Medicine

Diagnosis and treatment of common internal medicine conditions, including gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and musculoskeletal disorders.

The Department of Internal Medicine at Ky Hoa Medical Center is responsible for examining and treating most common medical conditions in the community. Doctors perform comprehensive examinations, order appropriate diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans or guide home health monitoring — which is an important first step in each patient’s comprehensive healthcare journey.

What issues does Internal Medicine examine and manage?

  • Gastrointestinal disorders: gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis
  • Respiratory conditions: bronchitis, mild pneumonia, chronic cough, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cardiovascular and metabolic conditions: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol)
  • Musculoskeletal conditions: back pain, arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout
  • Endocrine disorders: thyroid disorders, obesity, prediabetes
  • Prolonged fatigue, abnormal or unexplained weight loss

When should you go for an examination?

  • Stomach pain, heartburn, bloating, digestive disorders lasting longer than 2 weeks
  • Cough, shortness of breath, or chest tightness that does not subside after conventional treatment
  • High blood pressure, high blood sugar, or high cholesterol detected during casual measurements
  • Unexplained fatigue, rapid weight loss, or night sweats
  • Regular follow-up visits to monitor chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes

Clinical Examination Process

  1. Reception and Information Recording: The nurse measures vital signs and records medical history and the reason for the visit.
  2. Clinical Examination: The doctor takes a detailed medical history, performs a physical examination, and assesses relevant organ systems.
  3. Diagnostic Testing Orders: Depending on the condition, the doctor may order blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound, or electrocardiogram (ECG) right at the center.
  4. Counseling and Treatment: The doctor explains the results, prescribes medication, or provides guidance on lifestyle adjustments and appropriate follow-up schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Internal Medicine examination different from a general health check-up? Internal medicine focuses on medical pathologies, especially chronic conditions requiring long-term monitoring. The doctors have deeper expertise, and the process of ordering diagnostic tests is more systematic than a general wellness check-up.

I have been taking blood pressure medication for many years. Do I need to bring my medicine with me for the examination? Yes — please bring your current prescription or take photos of your medication labels so the doctor can evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment and adjust the dosage if necessary.

Do I need to fast before an Internal Medicine examination? Fasting is usually not required for a clinical examination. However, if you expect to have blood tests done (blood sugar, lipid panel), you should fast for at least 8 hours before arrival.
