A New Japanese Approach to Ulcerative Colitis

A New Japanese Approach to Ulcerative Colitis

Good news for people with colitis: thanks to a new Japanese method, patients have a chance to fully escape the vicious cycle of recurring disease and regain a peaceful life.

A new Japanese view of colitis

To help colitis patients break the cycle, Japanese researchers identified the root cause of why ulcerative colitis keeps recurring and becomes chronic and hard to cure: the beneficial bacteria in the gut — especially in the colon — are severely depleted by long-term medication, symptom-relief drugs such as anti-diarrhoeals and laxatives, and, most damaging of all, antibiotics used to heal the ulcers.

Colitis

The human gut hosts a microbiome of both beneficial and harmful bacteria; the golden ratio for a healthy digestive system is 85% beneficial to 15% harmful. Beneficial bacteria suppress harmful ones, balance the microbiome, secrete enzymes to digest food, and clear waste out of the body. In the book The Enzyme Factor, Japanese author Hiromi Shinya notes there are more than 5,000 kinds of enzymes; of those produced inside the body, about 3,000 are made by gut bacteria.

When beneficial bacteria are depleted, there are not enough digestive enzymes, and harmful bacteria flare up, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhoea; stools that are alternately hard and loose, mushy, foamy, mottled and foul-smelling; bloating, gas, loss of appetite and nausea; frequent bouts of stomach pain; and a constant urge to move the bowels.

The Japanese also showed that beneficial bacteria living on the intestinal villi secrete mucus that forms a double shield protecting the lining of the intestine and colon — especially newly healed ulcers. Replenishing beneficial bacteria is therefore the decisive factor in helping colitis patients escape the cycle and prevent colorectal cancer. Yet most patients overlook this.

A solution to free colitis patients from the ordeal

Replenish a large amount of Bifidobacterium (Bifido), the key to a healthy colon. Bifido accounts for more than 90% of all gut beneficial bacteria and lives mainly in the colon; it attaches to the villi and secretes mucus over them, forming a double shield that protects the colon wall. The villi also absorb and trap harmful substances from food so the beneficial bacteria can process and eliminate them. Fully replenishing Bifido thus helps colitis patients break the cycle of recurrence.

But Bifido is very sensitive and is almost entirely destroyed passing through stomach acid, so ordinary probiotics do not help.

The Japanese invented the breakthrough SMC technology, wrapping live Bifido in an acid-resistant double-membrane capsule to produce a probiotic that delivers more than 90% of the live bacteria into the gut — all the way to the colon.

Bifido protected by a double membrane
Bifido is wrapped in a double protective membrane so it can pass through stomach acid and reach the small intestine and colon.

Once a sufficient amount of Bifido is taken, it quickly attaches to the ulcers, secreting mucus to protect them and natural antibiotics to help them heal, regenerating the villi and rebuilding the shield over the newly healed ulcers. Food and waste then pass over the ulcers without touching them, harmful substances cannot penetrate, the pain subsides, and the disease does not return.

The Bifido added to the colon helps absorb all the food coming down from the small intestine, clears waste and forms stools, and restores normal digestive function — gradually easing abdominal pain, rumbling, bloating, gas and indigestion, and resolving completely once enough Bifido is supplied, ending the endless recurrences.
