A health insurance card sits in the wallet for years, but when the moment comes to use it, many people are still unsure: where to go, what to bring, how long the wait will be, and which parts the fund actually covers. This page answers those questions in advance, so that the visit goes more smoothly for the whole family.
Ky Hoa Medical Center is a primary healthcare facility under contract with Ho Chi Minh City Social Insurance. Patients who need a health insurance (BHYT) examination should contact the center in advance for guidance on the required documents, examination times, and related information.
What a health insurance visit at Ky Hoa covers
Patients registered for primary care at the center are examined by a doctor, given investigations and prescribed medication within the scope of practice approved by the competent authority. The most commonly used service groups are:
- Examination and treatment of common internal conditions at General Internal Medicine
- Specialty consultations: ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Dentistry
- Laboratory tests, ultrasound, X-ray and other investigations when ordered by a doctor
- Dispensing prescribed medication and scheduling follow-up visits for chronic conditions
- Referral in accordance with regulations when the condition requires techniques beyond the center's scope of practice
The full list of techniques the center is licensed to perform is available on our Procedures page.
What to bring
- A valid health insurance card registered for primary care at Ky Hoa Medical Center
- Photo identification: a citizen ID card, or a birth certificate for young children
- Your medical record book, prescriptions and previous test results, if you are being monitored for a chronic condition
- Your follow-up appointment slip, if one was issued at your last visit
If you use your health insurance card through the VssID app or on a chip-embedded citizen ID card instead of the paper card, please call 028.3868.1097 beforehand so our reception team can guide you and save you an unnecessary trip.
A health insurance visit, step by step
- Take a number and register: Present your health insurance card and identification at the reception desk; staff verify your details and direct you to the appropriate consultation room.
- Vital signs: A nurse measures pulse, blood pressure and weight, and records the reason for your visit.
- Doctor's examination: The doctor takes your history, examines you and orders investigations if needed.
- Investigations and results: Laboratory tests, ultrasound or X-rays are carried out at the center and the results are sent back to the consultation room.
- Conclusion and prescription: The doctor explains the results, issues a prescription and schedules a follow-up visit if required.
- Payment and medication: The cashier reconciles the portion covered by the health insurance fund and the portion you co-pay under the regulations, after which you collect your medication at the pharmacy counter.
The center is open Monday to Saturday, 06:30 to 11:30 in the morning and 13:00 to 17:00 in the afternoon. Early mornings are the busiest, so if your schedule allows, the middle of a session is usually more relaxed.
Situations where it is worth calling ahead
Health insurance rules cover many particular situations, and each case differs. For the situations below, please call 028.3868.1097 first for accurate guidance rather than making a trip that may need repeating:
- Your health insurance card is registered for primary care at a different facility
- Your card has just been reissued, renewed or updated
- You need a referral letter, a social insurance sick leave certificate or another form of certification
- You would like an additional service outside the insurance fund's coverage during the same visit
Frequently asked questions
My card is registered elsewhere. Can I still be seen at Ky Hoa? This depends on the regulations in force and on your particular situation, so we would rather not give a general answer. Please call 028.3868.1097; our reception team will check your card details and advise you accurately before you travel.
Are there additional costs on a health insurance visit? It depends on the service. Some items fall within the insurance fund's coverage, some are co-paid at the rate shown on your card, and services outside the approved list are paid directly. The cashier explains each item before it is carried out - nothing is added without telling you first. Listed prices are published on our service price list.
Do I need an appointment for a health insurance visit? It is not required; you may come during working hours and take a number in turn. Calling ahead is still helpful, as staff can suggest a quieter time slot and remind you which documents to bring.
What documents does a young child need? Children under six should bring their own health insurance card; if a card has not yet been issued, bring the birth certificate or certificate of birth, and the accompanying adult should bring their own identification. If you are unsure, a quick phone call beforehand will settle it.
